Caraballo urges nj 101.5 advertisers to halt sponsorship until "jersey guys" apologize to latino community

NEWARK, abril 18, 2007.- Assemblyman Wilfredo Caraballo today urged companies that advertise on 101.5 FM radio and Millennium Radio's affiliate stations to pull their sponsorship of "The Jersey Guys" program until hosts Craig and Ray publicly apologize to the Latino community and end their derogatory campaign "Operation Rat-a-Rat/"la Cucha Gotcha".

Caraballo said that his decision to initiate a national boycott against the 50 companies that advertise on Millennium Radio came when Carton and Rossi refused to apologize to the Latino community as well as end their insulting radio campaign that began on February 6th.

"The moment has arrived for Hispanics to join together to demonstrate their economic power by not supporting the companies that sponsor the Jersey Guy program," Caraballo said. "We must follow the example set by the African American community that united to denounce the offensive comments made about the Rutgers Women Basketball team that led to the cancellation of Don Imus' radio program.

Caraballo said that the existence of the "La Cucha Gotcha" campaign came to his attention in mid-March when he received a flyer about the stunt. The Assemblyman said that flyers - which were distributed in neighborhoods with a strong Latino presence - urged residents to report anyone they suspected of being an illegal immigrant to federal authorities.

"This campaign undermines the entire Latino community -- we are insulted and hurt by this display of bigotry and hate," said Caraballo. "Carton and Rossi are using illegal immigration as a shield to hide their prejudice as well as their intentions to offend the entire Hispanic community. The campaign was promoted using Mexican music, a thinly veiled referenced to Latino people as cockroaches, and ending on Cinco de Mayo, a significant Mexican holiday, talk about piling insults upon injury."

Rossi said that as a result of their campaign the authorities had received 300 calls from "respectful citizens abiding the law" who also denounced the presence of undocumented people. However, it remains unclear if any of the calls actually led to the arrest of any person without legal documentation.

Caraballo has met with leaders of several organizations and his call for action is supported by the Hispanic Directors Association of New Jersey, ASPIRA, the Statewide Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey the Pennsylvania Chamber of Commerce and the New York State Federation of Hispanic Chambers of Commerce. In response to the campaign, residents, community leaders and members of the public from across the country have joined with Assemblyman Caraballo to call for the termination of the anti-Latino campaign.
